Cognoscenti of the world, procreate

Idiocracy, a little-known American movie from 2006, depicts a frightening dystopia: in the year 2505, we are all idiots. Generation after generation, educated, intelligent, and career-oriented couples continue to have less kids, if any at all, and later in life. Meanwhile their less enlightened peers happily outbreed them. The cumulative effect of this particular kind of dysgenics is a dumbing-down of human society that has less to do with the evils of television than with demographics and the gradual deterioration of our gene pool. Heady subject for a silly comedy.

Idiocracy speaks to the well-attested fact that poorer, less educated people are having larger progenies, while the rich and/or educated choose career or leisure in detriment of the reproduction of the species. This demographic time bomb is old news for many Lebanese, Israelis, or Serbs in their respective backyards, but has planetary consequences. Most of the billions of people to be added to the total of human population in the coming years will be born in the developing world. In the developed world, immigrant families gift their ungrateful hosts with both cheap labor and breeders. Most young Westerners today are empty-nesters that either can´t or don´t want to procreate to ensure that their kin doesn´t die out. In a recent Pew Research Center survey in the United States, the category "having children" ranked second to last among nine conditions for a succesful and happy marriage, taking a whooping 24-point-drop from 1990. "Sharing household chores", "adequate income", "good housing", "shared tastes", and "shared religious beliefs" were all deemed more important than children ("Agreement on politics" was the only one that scored worse than children, some forty points away from similar categories, such as shared tastes or shared religious beliefs. It spooks me that arguments about the removal of your toddler´s foreskin, which movie should win the Oscars, or which curtains look good in the living room, could be more important than the politics of your significant other. But that´s a whole other post).

Demographics and genes are also the subject of one of the most original books published this year. In Farewell to Alms, economist historian Gregory Clarks argues that the cultural and genetic transmission of capitalist values among the British population over centuries allowed it to escape the Malthusian trap and jumpstart the Industrial Revolution that moved some societies from poverty and underpopulation to relative affluence and drastic population growth. With a controversial thesis, Clark will now feature prominently in the academic debate over the rise of the West, which ranges from David Landes´emphasis on cultural values to Jared Diamond´s emphasis on environmental happenstance. And its title, a modified version of Hemingway´s famous novel, surely aims at putting it at the center of the development debate as well -more aid, says Sachs, less aid, says Easterly. To me at least, the most thought-provoking part is that these capitalist values (nonviolence, literacy, and a willingness to save and work long hours) spread and prevail due to a change in the nature of human population. In England, during the centuries preceding the Industrial Revolution, the upper classes bred more effectively than the lower classes, whose infants died in massive numbers. This resulted in downward social mobility, as the progeny of the rich and educated, moving away from privilege and idleness, gradually took over their occupations. As Clark puts it, "the modern population of the English is largely descended from the economic upper classes of the Middle Ages." The Samurai in Japan or the Qing in China, however, were strikingly unfertile.

If you are reading this and a torrent of objections to Clark streams through your thoughts, don´t rush to reply this post with your comments. First, find a mate. Be fruitful. Multiply.

An easy prescription, but a hard pill to swallow.

In my limited experiences, those people who have three or more children find themselves locked into a lifestyle that precludes the introspection necessary to maintain oneself as a congnoscento. I understand the basic reasoning behind argument built on the example of 19th century England, but does it work today? It is a slippery slope in today's fast-paced world--each additional child propels put the brass ring further from reach. Plus, you have less resources--educational, emotional, etc--to dedicate to each one (something to consider).

Any ideas on how to get the anti-cognoscenti to stop having some many darned rugrats?

Idiocracy indeed! There are few "big books" out there today that raise my hackles more than the work of Jared Diamond - admittedly, he does have just about the best name in all of academia and is an amazing autodidact, but . . . the basis of his arguments in his first big book (GG&S) often shaded so far (and often) into racial territory as to eventually "color" his argument as racist. Not to mention that it was riddled with simply bad history - the continuation of the self-aggrandizing myth that the Aztecs (and surrounding tribes) thought the conquistadors to be gods being only one of the more egregious offenses. Poor simpletons, all they did was manage a city larger than any in Europe and maintain an extensive agrarian trade economy that could sustain a massive empire that covered much of central America. His second, "Collapse," simply forewent much of that and relied on rhetorical trickery to cover the gaps in his argument and went so far as to suggest that care of the global environment might likely be best left in the hands of those folks who profit from its "management" - in his example Chevron oil company. But of course, such a supposition easily flows after consideration of the values proffered by capitalism - nonviolence, literacy, and a commitment to hard work and thrift.

With all due deference sir, I must call shenanigans. I admit that my interest in Clark’s thesis has been piqued since I first read about his “Farewell to Alms” in the NYT a bit ago but I am curious as to your (Clark’s as well?) use of the term “effectively” in regards to the success of the gentry class in their breeding habits. What does “effectively” mean in this context? Are you referring to the fact that in that transitional period between near absolute agrarian barter-and-trade economics being replaced by cash-dominated industrial production, the sons and daughters of the well-to-do were more likely to come to ripe fruition because of a policy of enclosure and subsumation of previously tradition-bound “common lands” being herded into fenced in tracts by landlords while previously bonded servants were turned into landless and free-workers – free to sell their labor where they could, free to die where they might? I would agree with you, the survival of the two or three gentry-born with one or two dead actually was more effective than the 4 dead, 3 surviving of the landless poor. When modern medicine can only coyly be said to have been in its infancy, the vaguely clean quarters and the ministrations of a personal physician (where’s my doctor?!) certainly could and did make all the difference in the world – but that was a benefice born of already existing economic wherewithal of the gentry class that had recourse to a threat, if not the actualization, of violence and certainly not because of their “capitalist values”! And I have to ask, are you (and Clark, having not done more than look at a single write-up) honestly calling on the “nature” of the population – as in, the “nature” of the upper classes were better suited to your “capitalist values” (which I find it worthwhile to state here again are “nonviolence, literacy, and a willingness to save and work long hours”). Are you honestly broaching some sort of nature/nurture debate here? That is a prospect that I find so absurd that I am compelled to offer I must be off in some manner or measure. Perhaps you are suggesting, and using, “nature” in some a manner akin to its use by Roland Barthes when he offered in his open-ended musings that it was “natural” for a professor in a French university to be Catholic, straight, and married when he was Jewish, gay, and single – in other words a casual (and no less damning/damaging) use of the word “natural” as a stand-in for “typical.” But even with that caveat, the whole notion smacks of an ugly social-Darwisism. Because either there is a presupposition that the well-to-do are that way because of some innate ability and, hence, are thusly and justly rewarded – or following the Malthusian trap and Riccardo’s “Iron Law of Wages” those unwilling to do what was necessary to pull themselves up by their own boot-straps deserved what they got – what they got being all that attends poverty. But let us escape all that and look at the sheer numbers: the life expectancy of the gentry or a “white collar” professional in Manchester (heart of the industrial boom in 19thC Britain) was 37 while that of a “worker” was 17. Of course we all know the problem with statistics like this (and damn lies) but let us add to it by mentioning infant mortality: for the upper and middle classes it was 76 per 1000, while unskilled laborers scratched out 153 per 1000. By god you are right, the upper classes were more effective in their breeding habits!

It would be easy enough to charge on in this vein; just as, I am sure, it would be easy for you to refute it by a more thorough-going knowledge of the Clark work – I just presume, I do not know. So let me shift tack here. Where the argument does not smack of overt social-Darwinism I would call the cultural scare-tactics of Huntington on you. Let’s be honest here, the “capitalist values” that you were quietly championing have nothing to do with capitalism – the only capitalist value that exists is consumption and frankly, at least now, consumption is better served not by literacy (which often, though not always, brings with it a certain measure of critical discernment) but stupefaction and distraction. And I will forego the entirely laughable notion that it “breeds” nonviolence. As for the willingness to work long hours; would you suggest that the great mass of the “working-poor” do not work long hours, but what do they have to save? Oh yes, I suppose they are blinkered into wasting what little margin they acquire in buying an entirely unnecessary big-screen TV, a result entirely predicated on the profligacy of their nature. Though open-ended myself, I’ll stop here. I have the benighted essays of the downtrodden to attend to.

Picking up a bit on where the Feral Professor left off (full disclosure: we spoke about this post over Krusovice on Monday), I agree that capitalism is not necessarily a capitalist value. It may have been at one time, but as "Idiocracy" points out points out, the simple ability to recognize symbols (latte=sex, Brawndo=liquid, etc.) is not the same as being able to read and understand Proust, Luther, or even Perez Hilton. The film is about an environment where reading is a nihilist abomination, yet capitalism abounds. It is everywhere and in everything. While the Mike Judge film presents a dysgenic dystopia, it satirizes the current state of American culture, politics, society, the media. The movie’s surprising unpopularity suggests that it hits a little too close to home.

To clarify:
At no point did I say in my post that I agreed with Clark´s thesis. I don´t. In fact, if you want my personal opinion, I find it surprisingly silly. I agree with the Feral Professor´s very valid objections, but I´m saddened that he didn´t take my last, and most important, advice.

I see a trend toward "Idiocracy" among my own family.

My step-brother, who dropped out of high school in 9th grade, has not held a job for more than 6 months at a time and has a prison record that's an embarrassment, has 12 children with 9 different women. These women are also high school drop-outs, work minimum wage jobs and collect welfare.

Then there is my step-sister. She's an alcoholic married to an alcoholic. Neither one of them have finished high school. Both have been arrested countless times for drugs, DUI and domestic violence issues. The have 5 children who have all failed a grade in school and one was recently expelled from Jr. High. Her oldest is currently residing in Juvenile Hall.

My husband and I are both college graduates, (he has a Masters and I am working on mine), and we have 1 child who is in an excellerated learning program.

In case you lost count, that is 17 to 1. Seventeen dumb-ass children to one bright child... We're in trouble.

I identify with the last post. While my husband's sister barely made it out of high school and has two children by an estranged boyfriend with a record, he and I possess graduate degrees and have no children—and may never!

I'm sure it would make a family sad if they rented Idiocracy and recognized themselves or their loved ones.
It would be quite painful.

I personally think much of intelligence is hereditary. I was adopted by mom and dad who aren't very educated (HS diploma and 9th grade of HS respectively) and have average intelligence.
I met my biological parents who are "uppity" and both have masters degrees.. myself I'm the first person in my family to go to college, almost have a masters, IQ about 135ish.

It's definitely true that smarter folks breed less and the future = less and less smart to a point.

But I still wouldn't want people I loved to see idiocracy.. it would really hurt them. I remember when I went to the Hollywood Video there was one on display that someone had smashed with a hammer.

I loved Idiocracy, but I think a far more pressing problem than "dysgenics" is that people of all IQ levels in industrialized countries (actually, all over the world, but more in industrialized countries than anywhere else) are having fewer and fewer kids. Some countries in Europe are already below the "lowest low" level of 1.3, from which no human society has ever recovered (Source: United Nations Population Division). Cultures that still have lots of kids are probably going to take over, and Western culture will be a footnote in the history books.

Or maybe all cultures will eventually reach the Western level of fertility, in which case the human species will eventually be too few in number to support an industrial civilization.

Just saw "Idiocracy", which kept my attention from drifting toward the remote control. (Typical formula movies don't do it for me.) It was totally unexpected and off-the-wall, and I liked it. Sacred capitalist cows were skewered left and right, and the dumbing-down trend was extrapolated to a scary level. Concerning the dysgenics aspect, the only hope for mitigating the future dumbing-down lies in man's urge to climb the social ladder and better himself. In that scenario, enough non-cognoscenti will evolve into cognoscenti that an Idiocratic future can be pushed ahead perhaps a thousand more years. Amen.

I guess it doesn't help that 'contraception' is such a long word.

In my personal experience, the introspective demeanor characteristic of cognoscenti (as mentioned by robert a. saunders, phd) leads itself quite easily to introversion. Introversion largely precludes social contact, especially the kind necessary for forming procreative relationships.

I don't think a socialist system greatly helps, either. This may seem a prejudicial idea, but the benefits system provides an environment suitable for this. Unfortunately, while allowing this permits, or even encourages, the parents to procreate, denying it punishes their children.

Assuming greater mean economic in cognoscenti, then a Malthusian event may create conditions which cognoscenti weather better. This also assumes that access to food, healthcare, etc. is economically determined - this scenario may not play out so well if it determined otherwise; geographically, for instance. The idea also uses means, so the standard caveats for judging by means then apply.

A more morally justifiable solution is to create an environment in which the characteristics of the cognoscento are encouraged. I don't believe that the current education system, especially at K-12, really provides that. I can only speak of my experience in the British schooling system, but it seems to encourage a very passive mindset - memorise this, remember how to do that. Not at all conducive to budding cognoscenti.
